I was being a little snide, and I guess I should have resisted the
temptation. :-)

This sounds like a better system than the one I worked under. In general,
the more you can focus the students on improving themselves, rather than
trying to "beat the other guy," the better. That's more of a
philosophical/ethical (and at least for me, religious) observation,
rather than strictly musical, but I think it holds.
