I'll join the crowd that disapproves of the teacher's reaction if the
situation was as you've described. The cement that pads ought to be mounted
with can be softened with heat. The standard first-aid is to carefully heat
the pad cup for a few seconds with a lighter or match. The cement will
harden again within a few seconds after you take the heat away. You need to
be very careful where the flame is going so that you don't burn the body of
the instrument or the skin on the pad. You usually try to aim the side of
the flame at the cup. Unless you know what you're doing, the pad probably
will not be correctly seated after you've done this, so a trip to the repair
man at your first chance would still be a good idea.
