For starters, the instructor should not have reacted so. These things
happen without warning.

However sometimes you can temporarily replace the pad by warming the
metal cup with a match or lighter and put the pad back in. Hold the key
in the closed position until the glue cools. Just takes a moment. BUT
don't burn yourself (use a towel or pad or something to hold it shut
momentarily) and don't burn your instrument. A little soot on the metal
cup doesn't hurt though.

However, as soon as possible the instrument should be taken into the
shop and the pad replaced. The glue is already old enough to have
failed once.
