My apologies, Roger Shilcock is quite right. I had forgotten about the
bassoon, which would seem to share the same basic fingering system as the
chalumeau register of the clarinet, also the treble recorder. So there are
TWO common fingering systems for wind instruments, and we lucky clarinet
players are familiar with both.

Just shows that bass clef reading instruments are a law unto themselves
whether wind or brass!
