For the situation you describe, I would probably try soaking the reed
guard in a 10% bleach solution (rinsing really well after the soak -
the 10% isn't magic, its the accepted standard in dealing with spills
etc... in a hospital/lab). While I was soaking the reedguard (and
anything else that a seemed likely source - several suggestions have
already been made, including ligature). I would throw out all the
reeds that had been in the (now) clean reedguards (painful, yes - but
that's the only way to make sure you don't re-seed anything) and
start a new set of reeds.
Even better - buy a new reedguard, and start new reeds...
