When learning to make clarinet reeds I was instructed to pay attention to
the length of the vamp. Too long or too short caused intonation difficulties.
I was just going through some of my Zinner and Wurlitzer mouthpieces and
trying some reeds. Foglietta Das Klarinettenblatt as manufactured by
Marianne Rieckhoff of Hofstetten Switzerland. They were sent to my by a
Swiss clarinetist. The are marked b1 through b5. The length of the vamp
of these reeds b1 (1") up to b5 (1.25") The blanks are 2 5/8". The Vandoren
vamp measures 1 3/8" the blank being the same length as the Foglietta.
They play on the German mouthpieces--anyone else out there ever encounter
soprano (Bb abd A) reeds with such short vamps? You can't use them in the
marching band. Ron Monsen
