I've not played Grand Hotel, but I saw this show on Broadway several years
ago. The orchestra was not in the pit. It was on a stage-size platform
suspended high above the stage at about balcony level. The musicians were,
therefore, all visible to the audience and very much a part of what we saw.
They were spread out across the entire width and depth of the platform. The
woodwind players were not all sitting together; rather the woodwind, brass,
string, and percussion musicians were all intermixed on the platform. As I
recall, I enjoyed the music, but by far the best part of the show was the
dancing (not the singing or the acting). It was a fabulous show for dancers.
