I've played in both concert and marching bands. I still prefer the sit
down kind, but I think taht everyone should learn to do the marching
band thing at some point in their careers. It teaches you how to
control your breathing, and better concentration skills. I was "on the
right" so dress right was always on me, which meant I had to be paying
attention to what was going on all the way around me. Keeping that four
step distance between me and the person in front, as well as making sure
the rest of my line was where they were supposed to be. I did this for
two years and it was one of the greatest experiences of my musical
career. However, I don't feel it should be a punisment. Sometimes I
got the idea that we were being punished, and I'm not sure for what, but
it always felt good to know that people were watching us, in the
limelight. Our highschool even got to perform in a production of The
Music Man on the Sacramento Music Circus Stage, and lead the Aladdin
Parade in Disney Land. How many concert bands get that opportunity.
