It seems to me that many of you are reacting to Roger Garrett's original
post without reading what he actually wrote! As I interpret his post, he
wasn't "dissing" marching bands at all. His basic premise, if I may put it
in Reader's Digest condensed form, was simply that marching band is much
more an athletic event than a genuine musical endeavor. Yes, people get
enormous value out of marching band: teamwork, esprit de corps, pride,
exercise. Not better clarinet technique, not music appreciation, not
critical listening skills.

Karen, your letter even supports this position when you call marching your
"favortie" sport. That's exactly Roger's point! (I think...)
