I, too, have found this to be a good, affordable set-up for alto.
Most alto reeds other than Vandorens are cut in an old style that don't
work really well. Vandoren alto clarinet reeds are more like alto sax
reeds (which work better if you're not using Vandorens). Alto sax reeds
are cut wider and usually produce a more solid, sonorous tone than the
weak and strugling sound alto clarinets can be known for. Alto sax reeds
simply make the instrument respond better and eliminate a lot of the
resistance without sacrificing tuning which is already horrid on most
altos. Selmer C* mouthpieces work well on most altos to help produce a
more BLENDING sound. I have found though, that the Leblanc pro horn with
curved neck can be flat with this mouthpiece. On these horns I try to
use a short mouthpiece like a Charles Bay.
