Subj: polishing cloths

Leblanc makes a polishing cloth specifically for silver or silver-plated
instruments. It is two pieces sewn together at the center, one of which
(pink) is impregnated with a silver-polishing chemical and the other
(grey) for polishing (and perhaps to wipe off chemical residues?). It
has worked quite well on my silver flute and my [silver-plated] clarinet
keys, but it does seem to leave a slight slippery residue - perhaps my
imagination, perhaps not. They also make a different cloth specifically
for nickel-plated keys and instruments. Of course, just because they
sell it doesn't mean that it doesn't harm the pads or that it's the best
method, but you have to have a little confidence that there's at least
some thoughtful consideration behind its design. It certainly is easy
to use.
Some years ago I used something called Selmer Polishing Cleaner, a
liquid which the bottle said was for all metals, but it left terrible
streaks and dulled my silver flute. I thought I'd ruined it. The
Leblanc cloth, however, cleaned it up nicely. Any comments about metals
and cleaning them from some of you who actually know something about it?
