I would love to buy a pro model plastic bass clarinet. I recently had my
student model overhauled and had some keys redone. The difference is
tremendous, including the opening of the clarion register by having holes
reshaped in the top half of the instrument. I see no reason for not producing
a good quality plastic instrument as with some repair work, mine plays great.

The reason I would want a plastic instrument is simple - I am a community band
player and do a number of outside concerts every year. The main difference I
have found in trying out the pro instruments is how smooth and quickly the
keys react. This has nothing to do with the material the barrel is made but
only the quality of the key work on the instrument.

I hope there are some manufacturer's reps on this list and maybe they could
give us an explanation of why we have to use exotic woods when other materials
could give the same service.
