This is an interesting and thought provoking question. The first
four I would choose are by three American composers; Elliott Carter
(Eight Etudes and a Fantasy and A Mirror on Which to Dwell), George Crumb
(Eleven Echoes of Autumn), and Lukas Foss (Echoi). The final and greatest
composition on my list, although it predates 1950, is Olivier Messiaen's
Quatuor pour la fin du temps.

sidebar-my "Three Songs of the Duende" for Soprano, Clarinet,
Violoncello, Piano and Live Electronics (Texts by Federico Garcia Lorca)
will be premiered in May. I like it, but we'll have to see if anyone else
considers it the same quality as the masterworks above.
