>From what I remember from his memoirs, through most of his career the only
institutions which seemed to have decent bass or contrabass brass
instruments were German military establishments. The ophicleide was what
was generally used. Mendelssohn used it too, of course - it would probably
have made
a rather good donkey sound in the "Midsummer Night's Dream" music.
