I think it's because most singers were never in marching band.

Seriously, I've been thinking for a while that wind players are, on
average, generally, in most cases, etc. etc. etc... better at keeping
time and playing complicated rhythms because more of them than of string
players or singers have experience with marching band and possibly jazz
band. People who have played in a jazz band seem to have a much easier
time reading rhythms like those in Bernstein's "Symphonic Dances from
West Side Story" than others do.
