Professional: engaged in a specified occupation for pay or as a means of
livelihood.
A person who does something with great skill

Amateur: a person who engages in some art for the pleasure of it rather
than for money ( sometimes implies relative lack of skill). This is
what the dictionary says.

There was one description of an amateur in Carl Baermann's preface to
his book.
"The reproductive artist must have a clear understanding himself, of
what he intends to express, and how he will do it.
The artist should possess at least enough musical knowledge to enable
him to read a piece from score, in all its harmonic and melodic
significance.
Without this knowledge he may, perhaps rank as a gifted amateur, but he
will never merit the name of musician and artist, in the strict sense of
these words."

These Baermann words caused me a lot of anguish.I couldn't read a score.
Still can't.
So there!
