I think the ophicleide doesn't look alike a serpent.

old instruments at this site. Unfortunately (for most of the listers),
the explanations are written in Japanese. However, I think you can
enjoy the site.

I remember there is a picture of ophicleide (and also a picture
of serpent) in Baine's brasswind book....
