With all of this talk about doubling on Eefers and Basses, I feel inclined
to put in my two cents. I have been playing clarinet for four years
(really an arbitrary number... it could have been twenty and served the
same purpose). Recently (jan), I picked up a bass clarinet, tenor sax,
alto sax, and bassoon. The bass clarinet was not a big deal to learn (just
a couple of tough practice sessions). The saxes just took a while to learn
the fingerings. The bassoon has taken me a solid month of daily practice
(of no more than an hour) to become *decent* at it. I do double on all of
these instruments in musicals and the like.

In addition to what many others said on this thread some weeks back, I just
want to re-iterate one point. The reason that people pick up instruments
so easily (usually) is because they have something to relate it to. I
could play them easier because I am already a woodwind player (same concept
with brass players), etc...

The main thing when playing another instrument (other than your primary) is
to make sure that you are comfortable with your primary instrument. If you
are put in a position where you HAVE to double and are not ready, then I do
not know what to tell you. Just practice that much harder:)

Ever Yours,
Ryan Lowe
