I don't think it's so unreasonable to play (or be asked to play) both bass
and eefer! I've played in pit orchestras where that's what was required.
Why are you villifying this conductor?

As others are no doubt suggesting, the musician should be careful to take
some "adjustment" time between instruments (not just getting accustomed to
the mouthpiece, but finger span, as well!). Don't panic - you'll probably
find that you automatically "re-adjust" to the instrument you're playing.
