I guess that, like so many things, there is no "ONE" answer.

I asked more from a curiosity point of view than wanting to find my own
personal label. I know that I play better than some people who try to
make their living playing, and I know of people who play great who
consider it a hobby. I know people who have done the union route who
for various reasons are no longer in it who make significant money
performing.

I personally like Gary L. Smith's response. It leaves open-ended the
answer to what I think probably is an open-ended question:

> "A professional is someone who is secure enough in his/her abilities and
> satisfied enough with his/her career to not worry what labels are applied
> to him/her by people who have enough time on their hands to worry about
> it."
