Subj: Shifrin Concert

A few weeks ago, I announced on this list the Chamber Music Northwest
Encore concert by David Shifrin, David Finckel and Wu Han to be held last
Friday, Feb 13, in Portland, Oregon. I had originally decided to give this
concert a pass, but based on the feedback I received, I changed my mind and
got tickets.

What an experience. More than just the individual technical artistry, I
was especially struck by how well these three performers came together as
one body. They played together, moved together, "emoted" together. It was
wonderful. If there were technical flaws, they were beyond my meager
detection skills.

They started with a Beethoven Trio for clarinet, cello and piano. The
program stated this was very early Beethoven, and I found I wasn't
particularly drawn in by it. In fact, I spent most of the first three
pieces observing the technical aspects of the performers rather than the
music itself.

Then they finished with a Brahms Trio for clarinet, cello and piano. At
that point, I stopped noticing the technical aspects and became completely
absorbed in the music. My God, that man knew how to write chamber music!
I could hardly breathe. What a glorious piece of writing. Now I have to
go find this on CD; if anyone knows of a good recording, I'm all ears.

So, thank you to this list for inspiring me to go hear one of the most
moving chamber performances of my life.
