I'll add one item to the recent discussion regarding Bb/A/C/D/Eb/etc.
clarinets. A few months ago, I got a used Noblet C. It plays well with
a big sound and reasonable pitch, and is a blast to have - I'm playing
Beethoven's Sym. #1 this weekend, and it sure is nice to:

(spoken) play exactly what Beethoven wanted
(thought) never have to transpose again! Yippee!

The only frustration is that the other clarinetist's part is
transposed for Bb, so I can't enjoy the experience to the ultimate.

For those intent on getting a used C clarinet, the place to try is
Switzerland (also if you're serious about chocolate). It's virtually
impossible to find one in the United States, and apparently C
clarinets are commonly used in Swiss folk music. Mine only cost ~$300
(450 Sfr) + shipping and customs; it took over a month to get -
because they included an overhaul in the price! Email me if you want
the name of the store and other details - they had a number of other
instruments in stock, at least 6 months ago.

Cheers,
Jordan
