I would like to offer my view as to why the shape of the reed tip should be the
same as the shape of the mouthpiece. If the mouthpiece has square corners
and the reed has rounded corners and you mount the reed at its normal position
in the mouthpiece then there will be air leaks at the corners where the read
doesn't contact the mouthpiece. If you try to correct that by sliding the
reed out to cover up the holes it doesn't play right.

My mouthpiece has square corners which matches the new reeds I buy, but my
Cordier reed trimmer makes rounded corners, which is probably why my attempts
at clipping usually make things worse instead of better. Since the Cordier appears
to be from France I was kind of assuming that maybe french mouthpieces have
rounded corners.
