I used to keep my oboe reeds in a plastic bag with a sponge too. It
kept them from becoming dehydrated. I didn't do it all year long
though. It kind of depended upon the general climate and humidity. My
house is very dry in the winter--hence, I kept my sponge very wet.
Pennsylvania can be very humid in the summer--no sponge at all. You
have to be careful--you can grow mold on reeds. I only did it with a
small number of reeds at a time.

Humidity had a significant effect upon the intonation and tone quality
of my oboe reeds. I have done this with clarinet reeds too and it helps
especially when the air is really dry. You really have to be careful
with warping!!!! I didn't notice as much effect with intonation
although I'm a clarinet player first!!!!! Perhaps I just made the
adjustments more automatically whereas on oboe, I needed to be much more
aware of things like intonation because I haven't been playing it nearly
as long.
