Roger -

I'm a 69 year young amateur retread who practices from 2 to 4 hours a day
with very few "days off". Like most people of my age I have some arthritis
in my wrists and hands. This has not caused me any problems in playing. In
fact, the arthritis is much improved since resuming clarinet playing two
years ago. And, as far as I can recall, my wrists (right hand, in
particular) have never bothered me since my early student days back in the
1930's.

I take ibuprofin daily as a pain controller for a minor hip muscular
problem and as a general anti-inflammatory. This, no doubt, gives some
help for the arthritis, but I am convinced that the "exercise" that my
hands are getting in practicing is the prime reason for the considerable
improvement that I have experienced.

Keeping your hands as relaxed as possible when playing is axiomatic, but it
is often forgotten when working out difficult passages. I'm sure that this
will help any hand, wrist or tendonitis problems that you may be having.

This goes a bit beyond your question, but I'm just a helpful (and sometimes
verbose) kind of guy.

To painless playing.
