I have really enjoyed a cd entitled "After Hours" by James Campbell. The
playing is about the best perspective on the clarinet's sounds that I've
ever heard. His earlier cd, I believe, belonged more to the so-called
"cross-over" category, and his sound was equally interesting but matched,
in my opinion, to less fortunate music.

"Robust" is the opposite of what I would call Campbell's playing on both
these cds, but very pretty and extremely _thoughful_ phrasing. This may
have a little bit to do with the construction of his instrument, the
narrow-bore Selmer recital. On the "After Hours" cd, his characteristic
playing becomes, in the jazzy music, a thin, warm line of careful and at
the same time effortless sound.
