Ahhh, Eric Dolphy. He is what keeps me in my jazz clarinet class,
although I Am Not Worthy. His rendition of God Bless The Child is
a clarinet classic. The sounds and emotions he could get out of the
BC are incredible and seemingly impossible. When I die, the one
material possession I want to take with me is "Eric Dolphy In
Berlin."

My favorite young avant-garde clarinet artists are Bay Area locals,
Ben Goldman and Beth Custer. Ben has a klezmer background but
his jazz music is wild and atonal. Beth Custer has a solo album out
that is heavily influenced by not only jazz but world music. She
also records with a group called "Trance Mission" that combines
didgeridoo with bass clarinet and it works extremely well. Goldman
and Custer approach experimental jazz in different ways, but
both are definitely worth the effort of seeking them out.

I can only second the remarks about Don Byron, Eddie Daniels,
Tony DeFranco and Ivo Papasov. BTW, this list introduced me
to these folks-- I'd been a longtime Dolphy/Shaw/Goodman fan
before, but thanks to the good folks here, I've been able to
expand my jazz clarinet collection. *Thank you*.

BTW, what do folks think of the early trad jazz clarinetists
like Jimmy Dodds?
