Bill,
I find it far more effective (and a whole lot easier!) to just wrap
the entire clarinet! This way, you're sure to cover ALL the leaks. Also,
covering the bell solves the annoying problem of condensation dripping out
the end. This eliminates remarks from the audience such as: "Oh, isn't
that a beautiful clarinet solo, and... eeuuw, gross! There's SPIT coming
out the end!" Wrapping the mouthpiece has the added advantage of keeping
your reed fresh for months!
I've heard of some clarinetists who then wrap the entire instrument
with aluminum foil, but it seems to me that that's really a sort of silly
thing to do!
