Well, Jennifer, I think calling them a "rip-off" may be a bit
harse, especially after so many comments saying that they're
reasonable intermediate instruments. In fact, I've never heard
any major manufacturer's clarinet being called a "rip-off" - there
are always a few lemons out there. Even the Artleys and Chinese
Larks have the reputation "you get what you pay for" - not for
being overpriced and lying in wait for the unsuspecting consumer.
If a reseller overprices a cheap or inexpensive instrument (yes,
I've seen $500.00 used Vito 7212s), then the reseller may rightly
be accused of "ripping off" the consumer, not the instrument maker.
Subtle distinction.
Your definition of serious clarinet palyer may differ from mine,
too. If you mean professional or majoring in clarinet at a well-known
music school - probably so. If you mean the community orchestra
player - I can refer you to many playing Noblets. They're serious,
too - but have other things to spend their money on currently.
