No, but you'd be utterly AMAZED at the number of people who believe this.
Unfortunately, many are school band directors who, in order to make their
clarinets better, make them play stiffer reeds. While more advanced
players with stronger embouchures (from lots and lots of practice) can take
advantage of firmer reeds, the more important determinants are the
mouthpiece and the individual's embouchure structure. You have to
determine what works for you and your particular setup. Often if you use
two different mouthpieces, you will need two entirely different strengths
or even brands of reeds. Experiment!
