I also recall playing that transcription of Wagner's Flying Dutchman. That
was at the U. of Illinois, and I'm quite certain it was done by one of their
great transcribers, Mark Hindsley or Guy Duker.

When I was in college a hundred years ago, we did a glorious symphonic band
transcription of the overture to Wagner's Flying Dutchman, where the
clarinets took over the ocean wave sounds portrayed by the violins in the
orchestral version.

I would love to try this with my community band. Does anyone have a clue
where such a thing could be found? I recall the music was hand-notated, so
I fear it may have been a masters or doctoral thesis project and therefore
unique to Oregon State University, but it doesn't hurt to ask.
