Life is full of surprises, some of them quite nice. Tonight, at my
first time back to band rehearsal after shoulder surgery, I noticed an
unfamiliar face among the clarinetists--a dashing fellow who was tearing
up the track on what seemed to me like some sadistically nasty clarinet
parts. After the break he introduced himself: "Hi, I'm Jim Fay." I
felt like I'd just bumped into Robert Redford of Robert DeNiro at the
Safeway. "THE Jim Fay? THE KLARINET Jim Fay?" Mumble, mumble,
star-struck inaudible gibberish, was about all that would come out of my
mouth. So I want to take this opportunity to say what I wanted to say
to Jim then, which is how much I appreciate what he and Cap have done in
creating this wonderful, terrific, really NEAT opportunity for
clarinetists all over the world, of all ages and ability levels, to
communicate with one another. I think it is the best kind of use of
this new technology and I'm glad they thought of it, brought it about,
and have stuck with it for years now.
