<Really a nice work.

Wood's "A Manx Overture" is also a lovely piece, with good
violin/clarinet parts. We perform both pieces with the Pomona Concert
Band occasionally. Has anyone mentioned the great Caillet arrangement
of Verdi's "La Forza del Destino" overture, or the "Die Fledermaus"
arrangement. Both great workouts for clarinets. So is the band
arrangement of "Candide". I'm rather partial to operatic transcriptions
(Ballet Music from "Faust", "William Tell", excerpts from "La
Traviata"). I attrubute my rather decent technique, and sence of
expressive lyric playing, to the fact that I grew up playing these
transcriptions as a kid, in park bands (Yes, I'm bragging a bit!). When
I conduct high school honor groups, I always try to program a good
transcription. The kids love them, because the woodwinds are challenged
technically. That's something that can't be said for 75% of current
high school/college band pieces, IMHO.
