>From the Boosey and Hawkes edition revised by Colin Matthews based on
the score autographed by Holst:

"It is not clear form the manuscript whether Holst intended the solo to
be played by oboe or clarinet or both. This score follows what appear
to have been Holst's first thoughts - a clarinet solo, with the oboe not
joining the melody until bar 11."

And I have always heard clarinet in the second movement in live
performance as well as the excellent recording by the Dallas Wind
Symphony.

There is, however, clearly margain for error in any assumption made, so
other editions make take Holst's "intentions" in another direction.
