Just to be accurate here - the barrel has mortise on each end
(also commonly called a socket) - the mouthpiece and upper joint
have the tenons - the projecting parts.

I looked up the word mortise (trying to find the plural - which
I studiously avoided above :) and, interestingly enough, it
derives from the Arabic word murtazza, meaning joined. Tenon
derives (finally) from the Latin tenere, to hold, and is
closely related to the word tenant, a rent payer. That's it
for today's trivia fix.
