Why is a low C bass needed for the Mahler 4th? My score is elsewhere,
but I don't remember Mahler writing anything lower than an E for A bass
clarinet = low Eb on a Bb bass clarinet, here or anywhere else in his
symphonies.

3rd part makes use of Bass Clarinet (mostly), Bb and A clarinets. You
need a bass with a low C. There is also transposition of the Bass part

there are times it is in A.
