I have a little story on a similar line as this thread.

I auditioned for the LA Phil Institute many years ago as a college
freshman. I had worked with the San Diego Symphony, but at the time I was
fairly "green" and did not know too much about how larger city orchestras
worked. I did however know that Michelle Zukovsky played an Oehler system
and was Principal.

Among the list of excerpts I needed to play was the slow movement of
Rachmaninov's 2nd Symph. to play. While I was studying this zerpt, I
purchased a recording of the LAPO performing the work. I studied the solo
on the recording and in analyzing the solo, realized it wasn't Michelle,
because I could tell it was a Boehm system clarinet. So I was puzzled, but
really liked the playing so I kept working on it using this version as my
example.

When I got to the audition, and was asked to play this solo, I asked the
panel "who played the solo on the LA Phil recording?" One gentleman
answered "Lorin Levee." I began gushing, telling them that I used it as my
study example and that I liked the playing very much. The gentleman who
answered my original question responded "Thank you".

I'm very glad (knowing my "foot-in-mouth" inclination) that I liked his playing!
