I would guess that the students lays the horn down or in the lap with the
thumb hole up rather than down. I was taught to always keep the clarinet
upright so that the condensation etc. stayed along the bottom of the bore
where the holes have tubes to protect them from the water. I try to never
turn the clarinet over except when dropping the end of the swab through it.
That practice also minimizes the problem of water in the trill keys.
