According to the liner notes of the cd French Wind Music performed by
the Reykjavik Wind Quintet, "This refers to a sheltered beauty-spot on
the outskirts of Aix-en-Provence (Milhaud's birthplace), often visited
by Rene, Duke of Anjou, count of Provence, King of Naples and Sicily
(1409-80), who had his palace in Aix. The movements describe the
activities of the royal court in and around this delightful place, and
are infused with the atmosphere of Provencal folk-music."
