This excerpt from Avrahm Galper's quote of Bellison reminded me of
something my clarinet teacher (who had been a Hollywood studio musician, in
the 1940s and possibly a few years before and after). He told me that
before Benny Goodman made any movies, Goodman played with his clarinet in a
convention position. However, this was too dull for the movies and the
director asked him to liven things up. Afterward this became at least a
part of Goodman's style of playing.
