Actually, I'm responsible for starting the whole thing in the first place
when Jonathan Cohler suggested I send my comments to this list.

I apparently did misunderstand your question regarding the Ebony Concerto,
and I apologize. I thought you were asking whether vibrato should be used
at all in the piece. This provoked my response: it seemed to me to be the
height of nervousness about using vibrato that anyone would consider not
using it in a piece like the Ebony (or, similarly, in the Copland Concerto).

But I stand by my (Jonathan's, really) basic point: there seems to be an
inexplicable resistance to using this basic technique of musicianship among
classical clarinetists.
