My Scalter,

I am glad you are writing a biography of that most enigmatic of clarinetists,
R. Kell. If you are successful, it will be interesting to find out about a man
who, despite his early popularity, retired so early and left no (or at least
none that I know of) students. It would also be interesting to know why he
chose to leave England and settle here, despite being completely out of place
among clarinet players in terms of style (as I suppose he had been in England
as well, compared to Draper/Thurston et al).

I suggest you try to talk to as many NYC freelancers who might have known or
played with Kell as possible. Here are some folks you might call.

Clark Brody
David Weber
Al Gallodoro
Vincent Abato
Julius Baker (flutist)
Mitch Miller (Oboist. . .etc)
Leonard Sharrow (Bassoonist)
Sol Schoenbach (Bassoonist)

I have no idea who among those above, if any, met or played with Kell. But
they may be able to refer you to folks who did. Again, Good luck!
