Dee Hays astutely pointed out how "The biggest problem [for young
players] seems to be a lack of patience. They expect too much too soon
from themselves."

I've been helping my daughter a little bit with her clarinet playing too
(while trying not to interfere her instructor), and I suggested that she
make a tape recording of her practicing and then listen to it a few
months later. As a young player, her progress is really very evident
and even she can be appreciative of and encouraged by her progress.

For us oldsters (for whom the notes do indeed seem to get smaller all
the time), improvement (assuming there is any) isn't nearly as evident,
so I certainly don't apply this myself. But it's great for kids.
