Jason,

I find that although long tones is often a common warm up, It doesn't help
me too much. As for what I find in books, ah, I'm not partial to those
either. This is not to say that they are bad; it's just not too
resourceful to me. I use an excercise that not only warms me up, but
betters my playing.

Dr. Borchert, a member of this list, is my professor, and he has given me
a set of strict excercises to follow to perfect articulation. The
excercises begin with tone development (perfection of the embochure), and
intertwining that with proper tonguing (ye olde tip-to-tip, lest thou
beist struck by lightning...or a crocodile...). The excercise consists of
four quarter notes: three tongued and one slurred. I began my training at
quarter=60, but that was due to embouchure work; if your embouchure is in
good form, do it at q@-----. Start on F1 (thumb) and articulate three notes
and slur the fourth to the E1 below. Keep the airflow constant and
articulate only with the tongue, no air accents, etc. Follow with three
more Fs slurred to Eb, three Fs to D, etc, following the chrom. scale
until you reach the octave and bring it back up: 3 F1 to F0, 3 F1's to
F#0, 3 F1's to G0... do it all continuously, breathing where necessary.

F F F-E F F F-Eb F F F-D F F F-Db F F F-C...

If your embouchure is well set and unmoving, and your tonguing clean,
there will be no squeaks or breaks, and voila! You've warmed up!
