Arthur Be-NADE. I worked with him for two years in the 1970s and own a
couple of his instruments. He was the master mix of scientist and
artist. He died in 1987 of a disseminated melanoma, and I miss him
deeply.

The dingbats who have been arguing about whether the clarinet reed
touches the tip of the mpc in pp, and about whether the mpc is changed
by swabbing, should consult his book Fundamentals of Musical Acoustics,
out in a Dover editon for about 12 bucks. For a general understanding
of WW acoustics, see his article in the NeW Groves, "Acoustics,
Woodwinds". And his Galpin Society Journal articles on the History of
Woodwind Acoustics (1994 and 1996, the latter regarding clarinet alone)
are of great value to any serious ww player.

If we all read the ww chapters in FMA, a lot of the ninny-headed
arguments on this list serv regarding the behavior of clarinet reeds and
air columns etc. would be stillborn.

I always heard Daniel Bonade pronounced as Bo-NAHD (with the emphasis on
the second syllable). He was French, so I guess it makes sense. The
other guy, I don't know -- I've only ever read his name!

But a .500 batting average is pretty good in the majors, so I feel OK!
