Because it was a MIME encoded message. MIME encoded messages
send _two_ copies of the message, one for browser type mailers, and
one for regular mailers. Your mail program interpreted the MIME
encoding and printed it a particular way. The people with regular
mailers got to read two versions, one intelligable and the other with
interspersed MIME encodings.
