Exactly. Given the vast number of times the reed strikes the mouthpiece,
it must still have SOME effect, even without sliding friction. Since hard
rubber is softer than, say, crystal, it is more likely that such a
mouthpiece will eventually need refacing. But is that because of swabbing
or reed wear? We may never know.
