That is, if we ignore the friction as an abrasive "accelerant" so to
speak. Heat, no matter how little heat, generated by friction on a hard
rubber mouthpiece, combined with the action of a material pulled across
its surface, is going to affect the condition of the hard rubber. To what
degree it does is up for argument. That it is affected is difficult to
argue against.
