Sorry about the font! Hope this is better for you.
It is not strictly true that non central Europeans are barred from the =
VPO. I have friends who fall into that category that have studied in =
Vienna and who have been offered work in the VPO by their =
teachers.Unfortunately, although this may be for an extended time these =
people are unlikely to find a job in the orchestra.
Basically there are so many Austrian musicians being specifically =
groomed for these jobs that it is unnecessary to look elsewhere for very =
long.
How many oboists do you know who play the Wiener oboe, horn or for that =
matter clarinet.
I think they do have a point in trying to preserve their musical stlye =
especially at a time when record companies are looking for a global =
sound that they can market globally.
If anyone has heared the VPO playing at the Musikverein they would =
surely agree that the sound is unique and made for that hall.
On the other hand some of the VPO are a pretty disagreeable bunch of =
people-arrogant , with fascism lurking just beneath the surface.
I spent 6 weeks playing at the Salzburg festival last year and believe =
me they treat other orchestras like shit.
It reminds me of a few years ago when we were playing Lohengrin in =
Taormina. Wagner's grandson was directing the opera and insisted that =
all questions were to be asked in German. Our fantastic horn section =
complied by always raising their hands in a Hitler salute before =
starting..."Entschuldigung..."!
To answer your question though,James Galway was a member of thBPO and =
not as far as I am aware theVPO.
