Generally, I play in a dry environment 99% of the time - I haven't had
much of a problem with reeds being too dry. When I had to play in
Mississippi, however, I did have to use something harder to get the same
amount of volume out (tone quality didn't change too much).

As for thickness, I'd guess that thicker is better. I say this because I,
and most other people I've met, prefer Vandoren V12's ten times over
regular ol' blue box ones, and the V12's are the thicker ones. (I think
it allows a bit more projection...at least for me.)
